Damascus Citadel
A fortified castle and one of the most prominent historical landmarks in the Syrian capital, as well as one of the most important examples of Islamic military architecture in the Middle Ages. It has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
It is located in the northwestern corner of the Old City and is distinguished by its high walls and massive towers.
Foundation:
Its construction began during the Seljuk era, specifically in 1076 AD, and it was greatly expanded during the Ayyubid period.
Location and uniqueness:
It occupies a strategic location and is considered the only fortress in Syria built on flat land rather than on a hill, surrounded by a deep moat.
Structure:
The citadel covers a vast area of about 33,000 square meters and includes high defensive walls and 12 defensive towers. It was equipped with 300 arrow slits.

Visitors can walk along the high walls and explore the main gates, such as Bab al-Hadid and Bab al-Sijn.
